I learn in a telephone conversation with My Lovely Wife that the chimney stack of our block of flats has been damaged in the recent gales. Our upstairs neighbours have been collecting quotes for emergency repairs and longer term work.

I’d hoped we’d escaped significant damage.

I was, in fact, a little surprised that we had. When we bought the flat about five years ago the survey reported that the roof was not in great condition and the vendor reduced the price by a few thousand pounds as a result.

I have to phone our insurance company tonight to inform them of the situation.

This is less than awesome.

Not knowing what your chimney looks like isn't so bad when you're not on the top floor. My guttering needs fixing too but we don't have a factor and nearly all the other flats in the building are rented so I keep putting off trying to organise anything :( I'm never buying a tenement flat again!

The thunder after the lightning strike was the loudest thing I've ever heard and I've stood next to cannon being fired at a reenactment event.
