My Lovely Wife and I have just received the Captain's P4 Home Work Grid for term one. The scheme of arrangement for homework is that he has to pick one activity from this list each week and do it, and sometimes make a short report about it. He gets spelling homework as well. The Grid is below.

Activity 1: Literacy: Write a paragraph using WOW words to describe one character in Charlotte’s Web. Type up and post as a comment on your learning journals under this terms homework grid.

Activity 2: Literacy: Listen/watch/read a news article that interests you about a current issue. Discuss it with someone at home.

Activity 3: Maths: What’s my shape? Write a description of a 3D shape using faces, vertices and edges. Post on your learning journals and your class will try to guess which shape you have described.

Activity 4: Numeracy: Practice your place value skills using this game: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/place-value/place-value-charts.Your target is to focus on the word section of the game.

Activity 5: Health and Wellbeing: Small things make a difference: what could you change in your day to be eco-friendly? For example, turning the tap off when your brush your teeth, unplugging games that are not being used and thinking about how to reduce, reuse, recycle. Post your action on your learning journal.

Activity 6: Health and Wellbeing: Take the opportunity to head outside and challenge yourself to run/jog a mile. How long does this take you? Could you improve your time later in the term?

Activity 7: IDL/Topic: Make a list of the ingredients included in your dinner. Post them on your learning journals in their food types or categories. Extension: Could you help in the kitchen to prepare the meal or set the table for dinner?

Activity 8: Expressive Arts: Create a fruit face in the style of artist Arcimboldo. Use the link for inspiration. https://kinderart.com/art-lessons/drawing/fruit-and-vegetable-portraits/ Make your face out of fruit, snap a picture and bring it into school!

This seems much more interesting than homework I remember at the same age. I like the fact that he is encouraged to engage with other people, his class mates in Activity 3, someone from home in 2 and to get involved in the kitchen in 7.

I'm particularly looking forward to Activity 2. I get good chat from him when we discuss the news. I'm also looking forward to doing some cooking with him and even going for a run.

A jolly weekend in Birmingham with BB.

We arrived late on Friday night and checked in to our more upmarket than usual hotel in the centre of Birmingham. A bit of a chat and a catch up (a chatchup) on the train meant we were all ready for an early night on Friday. BB is working hard for her A Levels and, as Captain Wrangler of the Day last weekend I think we both deserved an early night.

Saturday, breakfast at the hotel and then out to the Universtiy campus to look at (from the outside) the favoured halls of residence for BB's first year. They look fine. Some are older than others. They will be small rooms in small flats I guess but the new ones should at least be warm and dry. Birmingham University has a campus on the outskirts of the city and part of this is essentially a park with a load of student flats in it. This includes a twenty storey high rise hall which looks dead swanky.

It was a lovely sunny day for a walk so we walked around a lot. We found ourselves at about 3pm looking for a coffee and the only place open was the staff bar. I saw the end of the Scottish Cup semi-final between Hibs and Dundee United, had a pint of local university beer and nice sandwich.

Back to town to visit Waterstones. I bought, the first (chronologically) Flashman book, two novels by Lindsay Davis, one a Flavia Alba novel and the other a courtly intrigue about Domitian, a book on evolution, a history of the War of the Three Kingdons and Mary Beard's general history of Rome. BB bought nothing - she has enough reading to do.

We went out for a curry for dinner by the canalside - it was nice. Birmingham seems to be gentrifying itself. This is a thing I am mostly in favour of. Then home to watch some television and read and have another early night.

Sunday, no breakfast, but a walk along the canal to a Brazilian barbeque buffet for early lunch then home on the train.

Restful and pleasant.

BB seems okay about the exams. I'm not sure there is much I can do to help her.
