Broken Glasses

The Capt has broken my glasses. I’m not quite sure how he did it. One second I was wearing them, the next he had them in his hands, a second later he had twisted one arm back on itself, popped the screw holding the frames together and the lens was out.

This is going to be inconvenient. My other glasses are sunglasses or six years old.

I am currently wearing contact lens. They are not working so well in the air conditioned office in which I spend most of my day looking at small numbers on VDU.


I'm already struggling to see and it's only ten o'clock.

The Captain has been pretty good about breaking stuff so far. This is the first serious loss or damage incident.

Fortunately he's quite a delicate wee boy despite his rumbunctuous enthusiasm for things.

I should have mentioned that I use daily disposable contacts - high water content and I usually have a handful around somewhere, as well as six month's supply at home.

How do you find them in an office environment?

I used to use hard contacts. Partly because I wanted contacts when I was 18 because I was dashing and good looking and not wearing glasses most days made me look better but meant I could also wear glasses on occassion for those senstive, philosophical "he's so clever it's sexy" times but mainly because my optician thought they would slow down the rate of decay of one of my eye problems. She appears to have been correct.

When I was in my late 20's I used for a while montly disposables which worked fine but I struggled with them in the office spreadsheet bashing so gave up on them.

I've never tried dailies. I might give them a go when the Captain is older. As I'm getting up in the night I need to have my glasses handy any way so I get out of the habit of having contacts in play too.

I've found them perfect in the office - most days I pop them in at 6.30, and take them out around 10.30 at night. This isn't ideal practice, and I've been doing it for about 10 years now (I've always had soft lenses, but went from the yearly to daily versions pretty quickly). My most recent, very thorough eye examination showed a little bit of inflamation, but very mild and perfectly acceptable. I've been advised to move on to the next advance in lenses, and I will, just as soon as I use up the six month's supply I've built up. It's amazing how quickly that can happen when you don't wear them every day. I pay about £20 a month, if that's a help, and I also have a pair of glasses for night time forays to the loo. You'll understand when you're older.

I intend to use incontintence pants. I've spent too much of my life sleeping at the beck and call of other people's bodily functions to want to be disturbed by my own.
