Yeah – I think I’m probably done with distillery tours. Until I’m able to go an play with the machinery or spend hours looking over the place I don’t think I’m going to learn much more than I already know. Getting hold of some material from the Scotch Whisky Research Institute would teach me more.
I’d quite like to go and work in a distillery for a long weekend.
There are all kinds of hazards with making one’s own whisky.
My mum, who grew up in rural Gloucestershire, has told me stories of various villagers going blind after drinking home made moonshine. Then there is the whole explosive atmosphere angle. Not to mention taxes, imposts and criminal smuggling. This is before one gets to the obvious dangers of drug fuelled sexual excess on an island.
If I were going to make my own I would locate the distillery in the city of Edinburgh, Shetland or Vatarsay.
