A Monday Magnificent Seven
It's been a busy and pleasant time since I last journalled (or widthed).
1) Games - this week at lunch time games club we had a week of head to head games - 2 player games only. I played Hive which is a quick tile placement and movement game. Played 3, lost 3. Had a nice time. I've ordered a set. On Friday I play Tak (the game from the book), Played 3, lost 3. (I don't feel bad about this, this was the first time I'd played the games). The third game of Tak was an epic contest that swung back and forth, to the point where I was contemplating forcing a stalemate. I was very pleased with how quickly I'd picked it up and how focused I was. My brain literally throbbing afterwards. So I've been inspired to try and make a set for myself. Off to Wickes on Saturday for a bit of wood and a new sander. Spent some of Saturday afternoon cutting and sanding wood with MLW and the Captain and I've now reached the point where I'm staining the dark stones ahead of varnishing the whole set. I should have it finished by the end of the week.

2) I have been cast in a play with the Edinburgh Grads Theatre Group (EGTG - the new name for the Grads). The play is called skirt, and is a political play about the experience of women in politics and life more generally. It is written by my friend Claire and will be directed by her. I took part in some of the workshops that she used during the writing process. I expect there will be more workshops before the final script. I play TM, the failing Leader of the Opposition at Westminster, it's a small part but beautifully formed.
3) MLW and I have are arranging holidays for the summer. We are going to CentreParcs with my sister, brother-in-law and niece for a long weekend, visiting my aunts in Cheltenham, then heading to Cornwall to visit my mum for a week before swinging north to see MLW's brother. After that MLW and the Captain head out to Porto for a week visiting nephews and cousins and I head home. It will be a nice holiday with lots of family.
4) On Sunday the Captain (and my rugby club) hosted our annual tournament and jamboree. Some 500 kids playing rugby at age groups from P1 to P7. Lovely sunny day for it. Good effort by the P3 kids. They played 4 games during the afternoon and played some really good rugby. Frankly, I think they intimidated some of the opposition teams with their well structured and aggressive defence (for 8 year olds). We had two teams (could have had three). I was looking after the Green team with the Captain. They won all four of the their games. Very, very solid in defence which is where the won their games. They are still running sideways a bit too much but in defence the Greens were very quick to organise a defensive line and really good at holding position and using their own line and the touch line to win the turnover. I may adopt the nom de rugby Stonewall Jacksdad. Anyway, and more importantly, the kids had a good time, wrestling each other on the grass during the breaks in play and sitting about in the sunshine. We have a few more games and away tournaments coming up and then it's summer and time for me to go on some RFU courses.
5) We had a nice presentation at work of some new software we (or "we") have developed. It was the first time I'd seen someone using the software as an operator might use it - it really is very good. Simple to use and very powerful. Nice work us.
6) Been doing well at exercise. Two gym sessions working on weights (I'm now up to several sets of 6 reps at 100 kg) and changing direction for touch rugby. Touch on Thursday was good fun and I felt like I was playing relatively well.
7) I'm a bit stalled on The City and The City. It requires some attention and this last week I've either been tired in the evening or thinking about something else or about to have an early start. Now that the rugby tournament is out of the way I shall give it some more time. I did watch the two important rugby games on Saturday instead, where a loss for Ulster and a win for Edinburgh saw Edinbugh win the 1872 Cup and more importantly, progress to the Pro14 play-offs and qualify for the Champions Cup next year.
