I'm happy with either metaphor. For me, the important point is that you can't predict the outcome of pretty much any intervention, so you have to plan accordingly. I'm not completely convinced that this is true for gardening in the way that it is for sociopolitical systems, because people routinely seem to plan gardens effectively, but I could be convinced otherwise.
