My view of the universe was formed mostly from two sources.
The Space Opera of E.E. "Doc" Smith, where planets and black holes became handy projectiles in space battles, and the Lensman series has its origins in the collision of two galaxies, and 1970's BBC and Open University science shows, where rubber sheets and ball-bearings featured extensively.
