I also have a real problem with the deserving poor thing. I mean, a real, abiding and deep problem. I do feel it's part of an overall problem I have with UK politics, though, where UK parties say what they thing middle-English voters want to hear.
I like the idea of a center left party who support immigration, have a manifesto commitment to being fully supplied by renewable energy sources by 2020, have abolished prescription fees and who have started an inquiry into introducing legislation to permit gay marriage. Luckily, I live in Scotland and have one of them in government.
My strongest, and occasional sole argument for voting Labour in UK elections has been that more people are hurt under Conservative governments than Labour ones, throughout the whole of the UK. I still think that's true, but the things that are being said to win power are beginning to turn my stomach (and this from someone who supported the whole New Labour vapidity as being worth it to get the Tories out).
I'd honestly be more comfortable with a fully independent Scotland, and will vote SNP so long as necessary to achieve that, in which event I can start voting for Scottish Labour.
