The invisible factor in May’s premiership and in particular the failure of the EU Exit negotiations is the death of Jeremy Heywood. I agree that her secretive character made her ill-suited to investment in the critical mass of cross-party support that she needed, and Robbins was an appalling choice of sherpa in that regard. But she lost the one figure who could have successfully wrangled this.
