The Vietnamese fought the French for about 10 years between 1945 and 1954 and then the USA for another ten years from 1965 to 1975. The Soviets were in Afghanistan for 10 years from 1979 to 1989. And we were there for longer.
I think there is real potential for a long, nasty, messy insurgency.
