I am interested in what "the situation as they believe it be" is. Or how they came to believe it to be thus.
I feel that there is an element of not liking the answer. That the reality; that there is a nasty new disease, which will kill lots of people, and the ways of reducing the number of people who die will be painful, expensive, scary and lonely at best and that this will go on for years despite our best efforts, is so unpalatable that any other answer is preferred.
But that also feels like I'm taking a smug and patronizing position.
