On Standing for Election to the Council of Unlock Democracy

Following some clarification of the electoral rules by the returning officer I can now say on social media that I am standing for election for the council of Unlock Democracy.

Those of you who are members and live in the North Constituency will have already received your ballot papers and seen me on them.

You can ask candidates questions here

Polls close on the 21st June.

My father is a big supporter of Unlock Democracy, although I doubt you and he are in the same constituency if it is done geographically.

Was he part of Charter 88 or part of the Communist Party of Great Britain?

We’re unlikely to be part of the same constituency. I think he’ll be West and I’m North.

He could've come to the organisation through New Politics Network/Democratic Left (Charter 88 was its own thing from its start 'till it merged NPN to become UD, whereas it went CPGB -> Democratic Left -> NPN -> merger to form UD.

It does still amuse me when we get accused of being funded by Communist gold. Always by their gold, not by their negotiable bonds, diamonds, rubles, whatever.

Gold has a certain James Bond / Conquisidor quality to it.

All the England places below refer to the Governmental Regions of Great Britain

North is Scotland, Northern Ireland, North West England and North East England.

West is Wales, South West England and the West Midlands.

East is Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands and East of England.

London and the South East is London, the South East, and all overseas members.

I'm in the East constituency, so can't vote for you, but I certainly would if I could. Best of luck anyway!

Thank you very much.

I'm surprised by how few candidates there are in the North compared to the other consituencies. 7 candidates for four places compared to the dozen or so in other areas.

I think it's a combination of less members in the North, and a certain amount of 'competition' where people who might be interested in such instead latch onto Scottish Independence.

Well, perhaps a good opportunity to develop the organisation in the North.
