Partially because of the lack of everything except agricultural products and tourist attractions on Prince Edward Island; there already was abnormally high traffic to the mainland via ferry boats and aircraft, so the bridge was immediately packed with vehicles as soon as it opened.

I don't know if there is already high-volume traffic between Northern Ireland and Scotland via other means, or if demand would have to grow over time as businesses took advantage of the link.
