I find it useful when there are lots of candidates (like the ERS council elections. Having a feel for my level of support (Yes, Sort Of, No) and the likelihood of being well supported (Banker, Close, No Chance) really helps me get the approximate ranking. I can put Bankers who I support below people, who are Close and then those below people I really really support but who have no chance knowing that they are likely to be knocked out early and my vote flow to the person I support who is close to being elected. Roughly.

I don't typically try to do anything more than that. I'm not sub-ranking with much attention within the different groups. I'm impressed, nay awestruck, if you are.
